Discovering Complex Cultural Heritage in Northern Ethiopia
Professor Willeke Wendrich directs the Shire Archeological Project, excavating and conducting archaeological survey work in the western Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. This region and its complex cultural heritage provide important information on the sub-Saharan counterpart of the Greco-Roman world.

Digitizing Loose-Leaf Papers From Soviet Tajikistan
The Modern Endangered Archives Program of UCLA Library funds the preservation and digitization of items from the folklore archive of the Rudaki Institute of Language and Literature in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The archive’s holdings include bound notebooks, notecards, and loose-leaf papers documenting Soviet folklore collecting expeditions in the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic.
Bilingual Lecture Series in Farsi Attracts a Global Audience
UCLA's Center for Near Eastern Studies Bilingual Lecture Series on Iran has a global audience following the series through BBC Persian, Iranian Television, and Radio Iran. The Bilingual Lecture Series was launched in 2002-03 to promote Middle Eastern languages not only as subjects of study but also as vehicles for intellectual communication.
A Historical and Archaeological Tour of Laconia, Greece
Doctoral students from UCLA - along with others from universities in Canada - took an art historical, archaeological, and broadly historical tour of Laconia, as part of the Vamvakou Summer Program. The second phase of the program will focus on the acquisition of specialized digital skills and the expansion of linguistic confidence in Modern Greek.
